About the Riverland Academy of Clinical Excellence
The Riverland Academy of Clinical Excellence (RACE) articulates the ambition of the Riverland Mallee Coorong LHN to be a centre of excellence in rural health – teaching, research and innovative clinical care. It is the next exciting step in a long-term commitment to medical education in our region.
The Riverland Mallee Coorong Local Health Network (RMCLHN) supports South Australians living in the towns and surrounds of Renmark, Paringa, Berri, Barmera, Waikerie, Loxton, Pinnaroo, Lameroo, Karoonda, Mannum, Murray Bridge, Tailem Bend and Meningie.
Riverland Mallee Coorong region was involved in the development of the international master’s in clinical education with Flinders University, and national awards for medical education and training from the Business Higher Education Round Table and the Australian Teaching and Learning Commission. The success of the Parallel Rural Community Curriculum resulted in the national rural clinical schools’ program and has influenced curriculum implementation in medical schools across the world.
Based on a holistic understanding of health, and integrating hospital and general practice training at all levels with a broad range of contemporary training in advanced skills, it is a one-stop-shop for career advancement in general practice and rural generalist. The Academy Trainee Medical Officer (TMO) program is also excellent preparation for other specialty training programs and includes opportunities to advance your career through becoming part of local and international research and education networks.
The Riverland Academy of Clinical Excellence training program was modelled around listening to the challenges of medical students and junior doctors around the country who want a secure single-employer contract for the duration of their training, who want to be able to choose to live in one place if they wish, and who want flexibility for part-time employment. All of this in a supportive community and along with being recognised as a valued part of the medical team where there is an opportunity to do meaningful work while they are learning.
The rotations of the Riverland Academy of Clinical Excellence are designed to provide a range of clinical experiences that are high quality and truly representational of rural medicine. This program can be undertaken as part of rural generalist training through AGPT with ACRRM, RACGP, Independent Pathway or other training pathways will also be considered. Preference is given to applicants committed to a career in rural or regional practice across primary care, hospital-based care or both.
